Location: The Royal Marsden Hospital, Sutton

Client: The Royal Marsden Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Principal Contractor: Osborne

Value: £12.3m

The new build laboratory spaces provide specific accommodation for histopathology, together with a number of generic laboratories. The scheme brings together two organisations; The Royal Marsden and ICR (Institute of Cancer research).

The flexibility of this generic laboratory spaces was a key design factor. Spaces allow for future change with minimal disruption to the service. Standard benching modules of varying height allow for a multitude of configurations to suite a number of changing and unknown uses. Mechanical ventilation is designed to suit this flexible ever-changing use, allowing offices to convert to laboratory space and vice versa.

The design of the CMP is centred on a central courtyard, maximising daylight into the interior spaces. The configuration and relationship of the accommodation is process/route driven (in terms of personal, sample and waste movement) with a clear path from sample receipt through to diagnostic and waste management.
