THE JUNIPER CENTRE, MOSELEY HALL HOSPITAL
Location: Moseley Hall Hospital, Birmingham
Client: Birmingham & Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust
Principal Contractor: Interserve
Value: £14m
The new facility provides inpatient care that meets modern standards based on Stirling University “Best Practice in Healthcare Design for People with Dementia”. The accommodation includes single room accommodation, respecting privacy and dignity, allowing separate care for those with dementia, located within a modern, multifunctional therapeutic space with supporting office accommodation. The design is developed on instrumental T shaped house groups to create smaller social groups to assist with care pathway management, gender separation and bed flexibility.
The design provides a working environment for staff, which is attractive, pleasant and functional to work in and encourages a sense of community, by the use of lighting, internal décor schemes and local control of ambient temperatures. There are naturally enclosed courtyards to create safe garden areas allowing patients free access.
The building is developed adjacent to a listed building and in a listed landscape. The sloping topography was used to allow wards to be economically stacked one above the other whilst maintaining access to external gardens.
