GLAN CLYWD HOSPITAL, THEATRE DEPT.
BETSI CADWALADR UNIVERSITY HEALTH BOARD
Location: Abergele, North Wales
Client: Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board
Principal Contractor: Laing O Rourke
Value: £8m
Forming part of the extensive phased re-development of the live hospital, this project reconfigured the existing theatre suite to adopt current standards in terms of space and clinical practice. The department is adjacent to a further two theatres which would remain in use for the duration of the works, together with pathology labs, again to have service continuity.
The works would first have to remove asbestos present within the ceiling space and involved the decant of those departments immediately below the affected area. Surgical activity was provided from two modular theatres, allowing the entire area to be given over to the contractor for the strip out and re-fit works.
The design process engaged with a wide stakeholder group, including clinical users, fire officer, estates representatives and infection control. Such engagement ensured that design decisions were holistic in their approach, testing the design solutions against a number of criteria, during which time many compromises were fully assessed and evaluated, prior to proceeding further.
