The new build Pathology project, Glan Clwyd Hospital, reconfigured facilities from 3 sites into a condensed new integrated Pathology network, which served the entire population of North Wales. It was designed closely with the users to identify the flow of samples from patient to receipt to point of testing to reports and diagnosis. Precise workflows through each work stream were investigated for Microbiology, blood sciences and histopathology to arrange the processes to maximise space and reduce travel. In tern this delivered maximum efficiency through performance with timely and precise results.
Work streams were designed flexibly and also positioned and designed so they could expand and contract according to the growth of the department. Non-laboratory support spaces were shared between departments and located centrally so collaboration was encouraged and space minimised.
